I am really interested in what Tools others are using for modding.

I use those (All open Source or at least free to use):
- Tortoise SVN http://tortoisesvn.net/index.de.html for version control, merging, etc...
- Notepad++ http://notepad-plus-plus.org/ For searching through files and minor editing
- Blender http://www.blender.org/ Well, for 3d modeling...
- Paint.Net http://www.getpaint.net/ Textureing, there are a lot of plugins available!
- Eclipse https://projects.eclipse.org/ with LUA Plugin. Perhaps someone creates a Plugin for xsp in the future
- Python https://www.python.org/downloads/ for speeding up common processes with scripts

*Edit*
- BVH Hacker http://www.bvhacker.com/
- bvh libraries e.g. http://mocap.cs.cmu.edu/
- MakeHuman http://www.makehuman.org/
- FreeCAD http://www.freecadweb.org/ sometimes useful for creating base mesh for static, technical or furniture models

Yeah, Notepad++ is great for XSP, since it highlights the beginning and end brackets, so you can more easily figure out if you forgot your end bracket or not. It also has multiple tabs... which is equally as useful.

I've found AstroGrep handy to search through files and find entries I want to change.

It has been stated that to edit models and scenery, we will need to use Maya.

I wont tell you how, but you can get Maya for free, you know.
