Even a yearly update is regular if it is done every year in the same timeframe :P

you're right, but that was a praphrase, this is the exact quote :)

Quote:
I will however update on the state of the development more frequently.

so you could say that even once a year is maybe more frequent ...

XSP should sell well, i dont get behind why the dev still has to work for other ppl.
Its a pitty that ppl do piracy even if the products prize is really fair...

If only 50.000 ppl do buy the game for 20 bucks he should be able to concentrate on development a little bit more.

But maybe he sold much more and now he is just lazy. Spending Money is definetly more fun then coding :D
I am really interested in numbers in that case.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the likelihood of 50k people buying this is not very high. While I might like it and you might like it, a simple search of something similar will reveal that 50k is an extremely large number to reach.

The top number of downloads for an adult game at DLSite for instance, is roughly 43k. And the second top is 31k. It drops pretty quickly to 20-25k after that. The majority of games get maybe a few thousand?

Or you could look at Patreon. Again, the majority of successful adult developers on there garner a few thousand people donating for the most part.

The adult gaming industry tends to gather a certain population who will buy and a much larger population who will leech.

Yeah Patreon is a good thing!
Some time ago i thought about creating my own title. At this time XSP2 was released and there was no need to do it anymore. As the dev quite early announced modding capabilities. Better mod a game then create it i thought... but now the idea rises again. I hope XSP4 comes out soon or i will have to revive that project.

There are a few things in my head about community driven content creation and open source game code. Just create the base framework and afterwards feed it to the crowd...
There are a lot of modders out there which spare time on nice but powerless things like sexout. Well i like that fallout mod a lot, but its very constraint if you know what i mean.

XSP3.5 modding frustrated me a lot. Most things i were able to work out but after the update deleted my wip folder, passion was gone over the point of no return... And the limitation by the engine are way to strict. As i first have seen the chains, i thought it was build out of several base objects which i all may utilize in modding, but after some hard hours working stuff out it turned out that all complex objects where hardcoded. I still dream of a sandbox engine which allows the player to mod while playing.

I also stated the idea of AI driven characters anywhere in this forum a few years ago. Well, with the recent news about the Go AI, word2vec, g00gle AIs universal Language and the other 50 breakthroughts since summer this topic gets hotter every day. There are allready approaches from russia to create an ei (emotional intelligence) in the next 1,5 years which is ment to pass the extended touring test. A quite ambitious target... By the way, g00gle also made its ai's base lib t3nsorflow opensource. (Maybe because their AI suggested to do so to speed up development, skynet we are rushing towards you! Always have to think about transcendence when it comes to this topic...)
Well, i think i have talked enough. ^^

I would counter this by saying that nothing at DLSite is nearly as ambitious; additionally, the vast majority of their catalogue is partially or totally untranslated Japanese, which loses an enormous market opportunity by default. Then there's the weird proprietary program they use to secure their games. And these are all blocks on their most successful products. DLSite is a lot like steam in that anyone can throw their shit on there, which means that newer releases that don't already have visibility can be lost in a sea of utter mediocrity. 95% of their catalogue should probably be segregated or removed entirely.

Beyond that, the way the market works seems to be changing all the time. Not too long ago, there was no Patreon. But now there is, and there are a couple of offshoots, and there are more people used to the idea that the things they like, porn or not, have a better chance of existing if they toss in a couple coins. The problem with Patreon is there is no price control - many patreon users have, to put it generously, an inflated sense of the value of their product. And then there are others that use the site purely as a tip jar, so there's no direct incentive, just the vague hope of future payoff or solely to feel good about supporting the artist directly. Not a bad thing, just not a product exchange.

I'm not saying necessarily that you're wrong in asserting that this game won't reach 50k buyers; there are a variety of factors that can influence that outcome, and one of them is regular updates, which simply does not happen here. But I don't think DLSite is a good metric for consumer interest, and I don't think Patreon is either. We're in kind of a weird wild west of how products get marketed and sold outside of the corporate world and I don't think any metric is guaranteed or impossible.

Honestly, they were the two most obvious choices I could think of to show any kind of metric for adult game sales since such places aren't all that common, which is I realise sort of the point you're making, and hopefully this game will be extremely successful. I'm just pretty cynical about most adult fare that gets produced nowadays, since the majority of it rarely reaches a high degree of quality/completion unfortunately.

Also, to clarify, a large part of my point was more 'don't think that the developers are rolling in cash and they're not working on the game because they're lazy asses'. It's probably much more likely (and supported by evidence most of the time) that the largest proportion of adult game developers have other day jobs to pay their bills. I think the most common patreon goal #1 is 'Make this a full time job!' :)
