Porn is it's own thing so to speak.

Everyone knows that at least one of their friends masturbates and watches porn whether they admit it or not.

'Sex' may sell, but the problem is, is that there are too many Americans (I can't speak for other countries, since I have only ever lived in America) still hold on to regressive, anti-this-that-and-the-other-thing morals that only serve to keep everyone from enjoying themselves.

I would like to point out some recent developments with relation to sexuality and legality/science.
  • Homosexuality is being more and more tolerated by the world.
  • More and more people are disassociating themselves with religions that contain socially regressive morals.
  • The DSM-V (the newest edition of the official book for diagnosing psychological disorders), unlike previous editions, states that:
    • Homosexuality is not a psychological disorder.
    • A fetish is only a disorder if and only if it causes distress to either party.
  • About a decade or so ago a California law that banned hentai depicting underage persons was repealed after only a year or two.

I think the word "mainstream" is the issue. There are many adult games that are popular on the internet. This one could easily be one, considering all I have read about so far in this forum, as far as the intended final product ideas suggest. But as far as boxed and sold for the PS4, Xbox, or PC, it would take a huge revelation in defining "moral acceptance". Secondlife would be about the closest to mainstream with sexual content, but even they can't seem to hop the hurdle of the presence of it, even as they released Secondlife for Teens some years back. Instead if wondering if adult themes in games could be mainstream, consider just the popularity of adult themes that you could purchase as a DLC, which is where I do see the nude patches and sexual gameply additions to games will happen.

An Erotic game could go mainstream, but it would have to be more than just a game about sex.

It's some I've given some thought to, but it would require creating an online game. Where sex, and sexuality, become attributes to a character. The hard part is finding the right gaming environment. Then within that environment, create multiple servers, or zones. Which then can cater to various types, of sexual variants.

The key is using sex, as say a social variable, over a combat or physical trait variable. The more intimate PvP's become, or PvNPC's. Bonuses apply, like trust, which would give bonuses say to a M/F couple in combat. Better the the lovin', better the fightin'. Like I said it could be done, but it would have to be an element of the game. Just not the goal of a game. It could be done, but the key would be finding the right platform for the game.

With the new tech available like the oculos rift and the quality of 3d being as it is, it doesn't really matter if its widely accepted or not. As long as a person can buy it home and the game is worth it. It will sell. Controversy has its benefits, all press is good press when the product is quality. There will always be some group of Dudley do-rights out there trying to make the world fit their version of morality. But people have minds of their own. and 80% of them will admit to enjoying porn, 99% actually do. So my view is unless their credit card statement will say "PORN GAME--$50" they will buy it. Naming your company "xmoon" instead of "assfuckers" was a good move ;)

Let's look at it from an economical point of view.

You have 2 products to sell, to a satellite TV provider. They are both for adults, and considered pornographic. One is a hardcore spoof called "Dickman & Throbbin", the other is fetish spof called "Caligulaingus". They can air DnT on something that is more adult and pedestrian. But Cali can't. Cali is too controversial. It's porn, but well, it's too controversial. Might be able to put on a pay-per-view channel.

Now they cost about the same to make. Which one will be more mainstream, and therefore more profitable. The delightful spoof, of the controversial spoof? Now back in the 80's when DnT was controversial, you'd had to go the back of very seedy video store to get it. Too spicy for TV then, but now. Well now it's more mainstream.

Morality and Sexuality are fluid in growth, but by impeded social acceptance.

I get what your saying, but its a bad analogy. This is a game being sold on the internet. an opened free market. No corporate judgements as to what is mainstream enough for their viewers. No "Family Friendly" image to be maintained. Sure advertising is going to be just as much of a challenge, it's not getting on steam lol. But a game like this spreads by word of mouth on forums. And considering this one is as the first of its kind to be worth playing. in my opinion it will spread fast.

A game only available online and advertised only via forum posts is hardly "mainstream."

Minecraft for the longest time was just that. Only recently has it escaped the confines of the Internet.

Very true, a game such as XSP speaks for itself. It wont take much if any effort from the devs to promote. I know i'll be posting some reviews on hongfire and anywhere else that will allow it. If the game were shit then its understandable, but a game thats as diverse and maluable as this can be any adult gamers wet dream.

The only thing that kept Minecraft out of stores is that that costs a shitload of money. Same with advertising.
XMoon could inherit millions from a rich uncle and XSP still wouldn't be sold in any store that doesn't have blacked out windows.
