Violence in games is generally accepted, erotica regrettably is not (yet).

Developments like the book 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' (not my favorite) are promising, but because gaming mostly aims at young people it seems harder to break the 18+ barrier.

The first Leisure Suit Larry was pretty hardcore (giving the limitations of sprites), but later went on to be just another adventure game. Also 'Duke Nukem' could have contained more erotic elements. But both these games probably could not get their publishers to commit to this.

What are your views on the future of adult gaming, we very much like to hear them!

In my opinion the issue is, that america is one, if not the, biggest market and they have those hypocratic censor rules, which you mentioned - violence yes, nudity no.
Germany for example has prime time movies with nudity in them, but they are shitting their pants with violence and Japan would be more erotic focussed, but besides them not sharing most of their stuff, they also still adapt the censorship the americans "installed" (pixelated genitalia) and current developement goes towards more censorship too.

So yeah, in short I guess there are 2 factors why it would be hard to get mainstream adult games:
1) economy
2) quality

1) you would miss out on countries with stupid censorship laws, plus ages under 18 years.

2) adult games are mostly bad to mediocre quality..engine, graphics, lenght and gameplay wise. Of course that also ties to economy, cause without major publishers or investors backing developers, it is hard to get the best tools.

Maybe adult games should go the indie game way: doing kickstarters, producing quality in a smaller frame and looking for publishing plattforms where they are able to sell their product (obviously not steam, since they are following age restrictions, as you may have seen with that "seduce me" game)

LS: Good analysis,

Kickstarter.com regrettably also has pornographic material listed as 'prohibited content'.

In the 80's the public opinion in America regarding adult entertainment was much more balanced I think.
Magazines like Playboy where pretty mainstream and you could even read them in the train or bus without getting sued.

They have made a very prudent turn somewhere along the way.

No idea which other kickstarter services are out there. Only other way I'd see is to make your own one, with donation services (like paypal, even though I hate that company) and advertise it on several related homepages

Few adult games strive to improve the gameplay in anyway. The Japanese have had adult gaming and story telling as part of the culture long before the computer age. Since the late eighties hentai had made steady but incremental progress in that area. Illlusion and Teatime have made some gems over the years. However it the player community at large that make the games popular. AG3 or the latest release Premium Play have been heavily modded by player communities like uppervolta and HongFire. This has made their games popular in the western hemisphere. In the west the fare had been a steady stream of linear games. Strip Poker or Virtual DvDs. In the late 90's several games were published but lacked interactivity or flexibility namely Space Sirens and Virtual Girlfriends. Then game a ray of hope when Thrixxx released the sexvilla game. However except for customisation and posing the games only redeeming quality is user generated 3D porn. The interactivity was good but has since become dated. The only adult game out there sadly is Oblivion and perhaps Skyrim. Both these games are main stream games being modded by a large player base of modders and fans.

There is little chance that adult games will mature unless player communities start supporting it. Bonetown and Whorecraft are 2 western games from recent years. There a lot of fun but loose the appeal quickly. The modding community is hard at work tho so lets see what happens. XStoryplayer has the potential of being hugely successful provided the player base supports the game. Remember Obama won his election the first time with $5 contribution to his campaign from the people. Its the numbers. The success of games like Xstoryplayer does not come from publishers but gamers like us. Adult games will become mainstream but it will be because of companies willing to work with the player base. When critical mass is achieved you get to the point when it starts to receive a look from the mainstream. This forum and other like it may well be a starting point to create this critical mass.

Happy gaming

Oh yeah, since you mention the forum: When I saw that there is a forum for this game now, I instantly felt that this is truly a special piece of software.
Normally Adult games are purchasable from faceless unknown developers on shady websites that scream "fraud" and "quick money", but a forum with a "request features" section makes it feel like a lot more than 'just another sex game'

Adult games can only become mainstream if they are built into a game that works on it's own without the adult portion.

Then you could make games available for all audiences,
but with a special verification process that unlocks additional, adult content or portions.

In essence you could market it to all ages, but only those over 18 would get to experience both sides of it - which is completely fine and doable.
Most games such as Mass Effect or the Witcher already imply sex, if you could actually interact in these scenes it wouldn't feel like a tacked on feature
but like a part of the story.

It's kinda like saying why isn't porn isn't mainstream. It has its own niche that it's "mainstream" in but it's not socially mainstream. Likely won't be. Probably because of Religious Dogma and Lazy Parenting and the Knowledge of that Fact. Heh, I capitalized them like proper titles.

From the industry POV, there aren't Erotica Games... more like Video sex toys. I haven't played a game that wasn't just a standard genre with sex added in as a gimmick or a video sex toy. I have an idea for another post in the feature request type thread that might elaborate more on my idea of an Erotica Game genre.
