Most bots come from china. They have a lot of ip's there so ip banning is hard.

Same with email banning, *@main.ru instantly cuts of a lot of people.

I general its always a trade-off between easy of use for users and spam countermeasures.

Some of the proposed ideas are certainly worth investigating.

I use phpBB for some sites, I know there is a better anti-bot protection in the registration page. Instead of captha use a question and keyword, phpBB comes with this feature built in so no mods required.

For example instead of typing a code name written in an image you have to answer a question. Like "What the name of the game (excluding version number)?" and the only correct answer could be "Xstory Player" or even "Type the five digit serial found at the FAQ page on our website at the bottom.) A question involving some knowledge you only get by looking around at the site.

The spam is indeed annoying. I am consequently banning their IP's and its seems to be starting to get less. Other methods have failed so far.

But have you tired the function I mentioned?

Instead of captcha you use question and response..

I have tried that but because they hire real people to counter the questions it did not have good results.

When you have difficult questions it could counter spam I think. But that would also make it more difficult for genuine users to make a post.
